A crash-course in evolution
Some years ago, I wrote an evolution-simulation. It was meant for my opponents on Evil Bible, that tried to debate evolution without knowing the first thing about it. It's been gathering dust on a hard drive for a while, but I reinstated it on my website:
http://www.nibla.nl/english/Bugs
The simulation runs in your browser: No downloads required.
(As far as I know, this is the most amazing program ever written in JavaScript - because no one else would be stupid enough to chose JavaScript)
There's a philosophical question attached to it. When you open the application in your browser, you create a living species. Should you consider yourself a god for creating that small universe on your screen - or should you consider me a god for designing it?

Re: A crash-course in evolution
haha, oh love it! I arrived into work this morning, loaded up everything. Checked my email which let me know you posted something. It's not too often you get to play God at something, so gave it a go!
I do have to say Job well done my friend. I do quite like the application. Illustrating natural selection quite nicely.
NOTE to people: The example of change of colour in this simulation is just one attribute. In real life; many, MANY changes are occurring simultaneously. Colour, speed, flight ability, agility, metabolism, physical, heightened senses, reaction time, & next to an infinite amount more, are all undergoing constant natural selection. What Neils has demonstrated here is the same evolutionary process that occurred to the real life peppered moth in London during to the industrial explosion.

Great game. I'm not sure which one of us best qualifies. One thing is clear, it sure aids in being sadistic, as I enjoy killing off the blues!

I'm working on an extended version in Flash. I never really grasped "sexual selection", and a good way to understand something is to program it. If the cold weather lasts long enough, I might finish it.
First I have to teach myself to build flash animations. I've managed to import images, animate, classify, add events and compile. Flash: I'm on my way!

awesome - i look forward to the final product - make sure you post it up ;-)
Re: A crash-course in evolution
I've split the discussion on the universes's beginning to a different topic.
