My journey to atheism
Hello all.
I was raised Roman Catholic, attending catholic schools run by nuns. My father is the catholic, my mother a nominal CoE but really agnostic. I had to attend church weekly, and do the religious ed thing at school, but at home there was no prayer before meals or anything.
I became atheist at age 15, after firstly rejecting the God that I'd been taught about (on the grounds that He was a nasty and vengeful God - I think Richard Dawkins sums it up best: The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully). It was a natural step to then consider the concept of god and to find no reason to believe.
Since reading The God Delusion, I now don't think that religion is something that one needs to bend over backwards to accommodate with tolerance, given how ridiculous religion is.
I have a pet loathing for hypocritical christians, of whom I have seen many.

Hi Lyrical,
Bienvenido to the Truth-Saves.com forums :-)
I particularly like your view "I now don't think that religion is something that one needs to bend over backwards to accommodate with tolerance, given how ridiculous religion is.", because that is one pet hates of mine. I can't stand the fact that people are so willing to over look some of our most valued shared morals in society, to adhere to the moral's of bronze age sheep herders, which are more often cruel and violent. ...It's insanity.
Welcome to the forums by the way - I look forward to what you have to say.
Cheers,
Clint
