hi everyone

Post  courtney on Mon Jan 11, 2010 9:30 pm

My religious views are much the same as ded's. I believe in God, although I do not consider myself a Christian. I absolutely hate the word "religion", and do not have a denomination I subscribe to. Glad to see everyone here, and let the guns start shooting! Very Happy

Who's this "ded"?
I believe in God, although I do not consider myself a Christian.
So, you're jewish then?
I absolutely hate the word "religion"
That must be tough: Hating a word that describes you perfectly...

and do not have a denomination I subscribe to.
You better watch it, then. Many of those who had there own thoughts about God ended up as founders of new denominations. How would you call your new denomination? The "non-christian church of Christ"?

Glad to see everyone here, and let the guns start shooting!
My pleasure. Always glad to help out. ;-)

Wasn't there some guy named "dedtekker" or something? Anyways, to answer your questions, no I am not Jewish. And do you honestly think that a belief in God makes one "religious"? I am not going to "subscribe to" or start a new denomination. A belief in God does not necessarily make one "Christian". By bible standards, one cannot be Christian unless they have repented, and been baptized. I have done neither, so I am a horrible example to others. But that doesn't stop me from being a believer. silent

Sorry guys, just sticking my nose in ;-)

Your correct, a belief in a God doesn't automatically make you a Christian. We know this because Jews, Muslims and so forth also believe in a God. The word Christian is just a label we stick on a someone to describe their particular set of belief's. Where an individual draws the line of calling someone a 'christian' or not, is kind of semantics. Maybe the term 'Cafeteria Christian' is more appropriate here?

The point is, you profess a belief in the Christian doctrines, and accept Jesus Christ as your lord and saviour. To me, that's Christianity. But it doesn't really matter. What matters is what you actually believe. And don't worry about not living up to biblical standards, most 'Christians' out there don't either - that's a good thing :-)

Sorry I had to get that one in there :-) I'll let Niels continue...

We're talking English on this site, aren't we? I looked up "religious" in the Cambridge dictionary: "having a strong belief in a god or gods". So yes, I do think that a belief in God is described by the word "religious".

A belief in God does not necessarily make one "Christian". By bible standards, one cannot be Christian unless they have repented, and been baptized.
The same dictionary describes a Christian as "someone who believes in and follows the teachings of Jesus Christ". (I think "someone who claims to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ" would be more accurate - but never mind.) By both definitions, you're as much a Christian as any Catholic, Protestant or Baptist I've ever met.

@Courtney: Can we please agree to use the English language in our discussions? I'd be happy to settle on Dutch, but that would probably be difficult for you. I'm doing you a favor by using your language, so please do me the courtesy of actually using it, and not redefining words to suit your own purposes.

You should know that Courtney and I know each other: We've been in many debates on the forum of Connecticut Valley Atheists: http://www.cvatheists.org/forum . As far as I'm concerned, there would be no point in rehashing those discussions over here, if no one but us entered the discussion. We could just as well copy some pages from that other forum.
So please, PLEASE, stick you nose in and add a fresh breeze of air to this worn-out discussion.

Using plain English, maybe I have given the wrong definition. When I say "religion", maybe I should have said "denominational" instead. My fault. I do not subscribe to any denomination, and do not like anyone who does. My view is that most of the Christians are deluded, in that they keep Christmas and Easter as Christian holidays, when they clearly aren't. Even the very name Easter screams paganism. And I am not even going to mention Sunday worship, or heaven and hell as punishment and rewards, neither of which is biblical. Suspect

No need to apologize, a fresh face is always welcome. As far as believing in Christian doctrines, I am radically different in what most believe. I do not keep Christmas or Easter, do not believe in the trinity, do not go to church on Sundays, I do not believe in "going to heaven or hell", and do not believe in the rapture. None of these are biblical. I have not accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior, and have not been "saved" or "born again". There are alot of other differences, but I think you may get the picture. And I am not out to try to "save" anyone.

I consider this a shameless ruse to make us go for our bibles and prove you wrong. Okay, I'll take the bait. I've open an new topic for it:

Okay, so you're a non-denominational Christian which is still.....a Christian.
