How to stay on topic Empty How to stay on topic

In another thread, Clint is urging us to stay on topic. I agree with him that that would be great - but as far as I've seen on any discussion board, it's impossible without a nazi-moderator. I've posted under several of them. I know of one of those nazi's that actually got a great forum going. His rules were strict, but they were clear and he stuck to them consistently. The discussions were pure delight - until the moderator got overworked and lost his touch, which was pretty much the end of the forum. (It was www.evilbible.com , by the way.)
Other moderators can't keep their hands off discussions, switch hats without warning and banning, warning, locking and splitting whenever the spirit moves them.

I wouldn't want Clint to play the nazi-card on us, so let's grant him his wish and open new topics instead of contaminating old ones with new subjects.

On the other hand: Most topics on most forums tend to drift off topic when the topic is dealt with. It adds a social tail to the debates, and I for one can live with that.
