Stephen Fry's performance

Post  Clint on Fri Nov 13, 2009 2:30 am

Hey guys,

I posted several days ago here on Christopher Hitchens & Stephen Fry's demolition of the Catholic church representatives Archbishop John Onaiyekan and Anne Widdencombe MP.

I've heard Stephen Fry before once or twice on a radio station, in conversation with Hitchens on the subject of religion, but I believe this was his first major aired TV performance debating religion (apart from the odd rant on Q.I. of course). He seemed slightly nervous at first to me, which is understandable as I think it is slightly more personal for him. But he did quite a fantastic and professional job, delivering quite an impressive and feisty punch!

I personally would like to see him in action more often on the subject of religion. He'd bring a lot of attention.

...For those of you whom have watched; what's your thought's on Stephen Fry's performace?

I think his performance was excellent. I don't remember him making any intellectual argument like Dawkins and Dennett tend to do; I remember him as an example of someone who was wronged by the church in a horrible way. This well-spoken, sensitive, slightly shy and charming man was scarred for life because he was gay. To me, his argument was more emotional than intellectual - but no less strong or valuable.

Hitchens was just Hitchens; that cardinal is a complete airhead, and that woman is the most evil bitch I've ever had to listen to.

What about Sarah Palin or Sherry Phelps?

Fry definitely spoke with more personal emotions involved, you could both see and hear it. Then again, a great performance still. Hitchen's as usual, really does know how to pull the crowd! I've always thought he's a very charismatic speaker.

The Archbishop didn't really bring anything at all to the debate as he was heavily out gunned. While Anne Widdencombe slumped there in her seat like a wicked troll, shrieking miserably and fallaciously with that ear piercing tone at anything and everything. Every time she opened that mouth of hers she illustrated the lack of morality as well as the evasive attitude the church has to it's consistent record of wrong doings.

The big thing that put a smile on my face though was the annihilating results! haha

Perfect description.

Palin may be just as evil at heart, but at least she doesn't look that evil. She doesn't even sound that evil - until you start listening to the words.

It's the best piece of pwnage ever. I wonder how they selected the audience though; most catholics will never be convinced by facts.
